Booster seats are essential in helping children who no longer fit in the 5 point
harness system of a car seat, sit properly in a seat belt. Unlike the law in
California of 6 years old
OR 60 pounds, children at the age of 6 are not
developmentally ready to sit properly in the adult lap and shoulder belt or lap belt
only. Check out the Correct Vs. Incorrect Restraint of a 6- year-old child in a
Motor Vehicle Crash.

Booster seats are designed to boost the child who does not fit in the adult seat
belt up so that the seat belt does fit them on the correct position on the body.
See the 5 step test, created by
Safety Belt Safe U.S.A to determine if your child
needs a booster seat.

The high back booster seat                            is for use in vehicles that do not
have any head restraints or                            high vehicle seat backs. Read the
manual to determine                                         weight and height limits.

The no back booster seat is                                     for vehicles that do have the
head restraints available or                                      the high vehicle seat backs.
Read the manual to determine                                 weight and height limits.

Unless specified by the car seat manufacturer LATCH system nor a single
Tether strap is to be used with a booster seat.

Booster seats manufactured and sold in retail stores are for use with the
adult lap and shoulder belt. If you have lap belts only in your vehicle please
contact mebessie@safetycouncilonline.com

If you are unsure of the seat belts in your vehicle you will need to read the
instruction manual to determine what type of seat belts and head restraints
you have in your vehicle.

*TOP 8 Mistakes made installing a car seat*

1.        Seat too loose in the car
Remember: from the belt path you should not be able to move the car seat from side to side more
than one inch; booster seats are excluded from this rule!

2.        Harness straps are too loose on the child
Remember: in a crash the straps will not lock, like an adult seatbelt does

3.        Children turned to face-forward too soon
Remember: the minimum standard is One year old AND twenty pounds. The safest way to ride is
rear facing so why turn them around too soon?

4.        Rear-facing car seat is not at a 45°angle
Remember: small children do not have neck and muscle control or strength.

5.        Positioning the retainer clip too low on child
Remember: the chest clip needs to be at the armpit level (on the hard bony rib cage NOT on the
soft tissue stomach)

6.        Harness straps through the wrong slots
Remember: rear facing at or below and forward facing at or above

7.        Not using a booster seat
Remember: seat belts are made for adults not children. The booster seat will give them the boost
needed to ensure the adult seatbelt fits the child in the correct position.

8.        Using a car seat that has been recalled
