IS YOUR CHILD’S CAR SEAT INSTALLED PROPERLY?

Did you know that how your child is seated and restrained in your
vehicle is just as important, in safety standards, as speed and road
conditions?
Riding unrestrained is the single greatest risk factor for death and
injury among children involved in motor vehicle crashes.
At Safe Ridin’ Kidz it is our commitment to ensure that your child is
safe in his/her car safety seat.

THE FACTS

Many people think that just because their child is riding in a car
seat or booster seat, that they are safe. But the fact is, there is a
very high misuse rate in child car safety seat installations in San
Diego County. About
96 percent of parents believe they install
their child’s safety seat correctly. It is estimated that about
80
percent
of children who are placed in child safety seats are
improperly restrained.
Nearly a third of children ride in the wrong restraints for their age
and size. Crash research studies indicate that children who are
improperly restrained are nearly three and a half times more likely
to be seriously injured than properly restrained children.
Adult safety belts alone do not properly protect children ages 4 to 8
from injury in a crash. Unfortunately, it is estimated that about 80
percent of children ages 4 to 8 ride improperly restrained in adult
safety belts. Belt-positioning booster seats are the best way to
protect them; however, approximately 20 percent of children who
should be restrained in booster seats use them.

THE BENEFITS

Child safety seats are extremely effective. When they are correctly
installed and used in passenger cars, you may reduce the risk of
death by approximately 70% for infants and over    50% for
children ages 1 to 4. This reduces the need for hospitalization by
almost 70% for children ages 4 and under.
In a recent study, over 5,000 children were saved by the use of
safety seats or adult belts.  If all child passengers ages 14 and
under were restrained properly, an estimated 182,000 serious
injuries could be prevented annually.
Peace of mind knowing that your child's car seat will be properly
installed and that you will know how to do it.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Know the Law and the safest way for your child to ride!!
  • Children 6 years old or 60 pounds must be in a child passenger
safety seat! However, a 6 year old does not fit into an adult
seatbelt. Remember seat belts are made for adults not
    children!
  • Infants should ride in a rear-facing safety seat as long as
possible. The minimum safety standard is one year and
twenty pounds. The safest way for a child to ride is in the
    rear facing position. http://www.cpsafety.
    com/articles/stayrearfacing.aspx Most convertible car seats
maximum weight limit is to 30 pounds with some going to 33
or 35 pounds. Keep your child in this position as long as you
can even if their feet are touching the back of the vehicle seat.
We want to protect the head, neck and spine not the feet! It is
    the safest way!!
  • Children over 40 pounds should be correctly secured in a belt-
positioning booster or other appropriate child restraint until the
adult lap and shoulder belts fit correctly (around age 10).
Once the vehicle safety belts fit children, both lap and shoulder
    belts should be correctly used.
  • All children ages 12 and under should always be properly
restrained in the back seat every time, no matter how short
    the trip.
  • All safety seats must be installed and used according to the
manufacturer's instructions and vehicle owner's manual. READ
